Mt. Hope Golf Course was developed by the Poly and Smith families. Merle Smith sold golf course maintenance supplies for 26 years. In 1988 he purchased his childhood home, a 75-acre tract from his Mother Ila Poly Smith. The purpose was to provide a lifetime home for his mother and to design and develop a 9-hole golf course.
Poly Smith Inc. was founded by Merle and Mary Smith with Janet (niece) and Dr. Cecil Furer, D.O.
Construction began in June 1990 under the supervision of Gladys (sister) and William Mcfadden. The nine hole course opened May 1993. It has been managed from opening to date by Douglas J. Smith (Son)
additional 127 acres were purchased and the second nine opened in 2001.
Mt Hope is a well concieved, diverse layout designed by Smith with family advice. It is tucked into the mature woods and open meadows utilizing all the character and charm that a century of hardworking farmers left behind. The course is situated on gently sloping terrain. The layout is core in design and strategic to play.The course features include water hazards, sand and grass bunkers trees and meadows. Greens average 6300 sq ft and are built to USGA recommendations. Greens Tees and Fairways were originally seeded to bentgrass.. The diversity of holes requires thought in club selection before you shoot.
